The Jomoro Youth Association, a youth advocacy group, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Dr George Sipa-Adjah Yankey as the Board Chairman for the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC).
It said Dr Yankey's vast experience in energy infrastructure development, and his deep connection to Nzema made him uniquely qualified to serve in this capacity to propel the growth of the company.
This was in a statement jointly signed by Mr Desmond Kaku, President, Mr Elvis A. Akroway, General Secretary, and Mr Ehyiman Andoh, Patron of the Association, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, in Takoradi.
The statement said under President Mahama's stewardship, Ghana had been guided by the principles of fairness, and the recognition of the contributions of all regions to the collective progress of the country.
"It is in this spirit that we humbly bring to your attention the need for greater representation of host communities like ours in the governance structure of Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC)," it stated.
According to the statement, Ghana's energy sector would be set for a major shift with the appointment of Dr Yankey, citing his past leadership at Ghana Gas, and his vast experience in governance, finance, and infrastructure development.
It said his unparalleled expertise in energy infrastructure development made him an invaluable asset to GNGC.
"As a native of Nzema, Dr Yankey has consistently championed the development of our Municipalities, the Nzema and the area at large.
"His appointment will ensure that host communities have a strong advocate within GNGC to address concerns related to local representation, environmental sustainability, and equitable distribution of benefits from energy projects," the statement noted.
It stated that Dr Yankey's appointment would bring confidence from various individuals and traditional leaders, while signalling a renewed focus on production, infrastructure development, and industry competitiveness.
"His deep understanding of the energy sector, coupled with his proven track record, makes him the right leader to drive meaningful reforms and ensure a stable and productive gas industry and will even help in phase two projects development.
The statement continued: "In light of these considerations, we respectfully request His Excellency the President to appoint Dr. George Sipa-Adjah Yankey as a Board Chairman for Ghana Gas to ensure fair representation for host communities within Nzema in key decision-making processes within GNGC and other energy sector institutions."
