The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has reiterated the party’s commitment to liberating Ghana from the threat of drug trafficking and abuse.
His comments come in the wake of a botched attempt to arrest Assin South Member of Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, by the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) on Wednesday, April 9.
This incident followed narcotics trafficking allegations made by Ntim Fordjour against the government.
The arrest attempt was thwarted by the Minority in Parliament, alongside key NPP members who rallied in support of Fordjour during the ordeal.
In an exclusive interview with Channel One Newsroom on April 9, Haruna Mohammed underscored the damage that past drug-related incidents have done to the country’s image, noting that some individuals implicated in these issues are still serving in the current administration.
He stressed that the NPP’s interest in the narcotics trafficking case is driven by a desire to protect Ghana’s reputation on the global stage.
“We just want to have a free country that is free from drug-related issues. The biggest drug issue that happened in this country was in 2014. The same president was the president at that time,” he said.
“It is for the image of the country. In 2021, Ghana was taken off the blacklist in terms of drug trafficking under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo. Are we risking going back there because we are not being sincere? The UN has also come out to say that the government should help with the investigations,” he added.
