One of the students who sustained a spinal cord injury has been referred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

A doctor at the Central Regional Teaching Hospital, Dr David Walawah, said the student was stabbed twice in the spine.

The injured also included an administrator, Mr Ebenezer Donney, who had gone to help control the situation.

Another person, an electrician, Alhassan Inusah, who had gone to the university to visit a brother living near the university was also attacked by a group of students who thought he was one of the visiting students.

He is still receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Regional Hospital.

Others have been treated and discharged.

The riots

The riots are said to have begun when visiting students of the University of Ghana and the KNUST as well as some students of the Atlantic Hall rowdily wanted to enter the Oguaa Hall.

The students of Oguaa Hall prevented them from entering the hall and in the ensuing melee, the students vandalised some rooms in the hall, smashed the windscreens of the Oguaa Hall bus and some vehicles parked round.

The Police

The Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Irene Oppong, said the police were called in at around 7.30 p.m. on Friday to help control the riots.

She said when the police got to the scene the students were throwing stones and bottles.

ASP Oppong said the team called for reinforcement considering the intensity of the situation.

She said the police managed to bring the situation under control and managed to get the visitors into their buses and out of the campus.
