District 418-Ghana of Lions International has taken a step toward youth and literacy development by donating reading books to ten underprivileged schools across four regions.
This impactful initiative, held on Monday, December 16, 2024, in Accra, brought together staff and students from the beneficiary schools to celebrate the power of education.
The beneficiary schools include Likpe Bala R.C. Basic School, Likpe Bala E.P. Basic School, Likpe Bakwa R.C. Basic School, Gamadzra R.C. Basic School, Klikor Unity Basic 1 School, Klikor Unity Basic 2 School, Pokrom Nsaba Presby Basic School, Asiakwa R.C. Basic School, and Ebenezer Presby Basic School, Kyebi.
District Governor Lion Dr. Helena Asamoah-Hassan, PMJF, highlighted that the initiative aligns with Lions International’s global causes, particularly youth development. “In Lions service, we focus on global causes, and today’s effort falls under youth development. We need to empower young people to become better citizens and improve their lives,” she said.
Dr. Asamoah-Hassan explained that the project was in response to requests from schools lacking essential reading resources. “When I assumed office, I received letters from various schools asking for reading materials. We prioritized those most in need,” she stated. She emphasized the importance of reaching remote areas, noting, “These books are going beyond Accra and Kumasi to places like Hohoe in the Volta Region, Klikor, Pokrom in the Eastern Region, and others.”
The District Governor, a professional librarian, expressed hope that the books would enhance literacy and communication skills among students. “We expect these children to read. Literacy is crucial as English is our primary language of communication, and we must encourage young people to develop their skills through reading,” she added.
Dr. Asamoah-Hassan encouraged schools to care for the books, sharing that this initiative is part of a long-term commitment. “This is an ongoing project. Every year, with the help of a partner organization, we will bring in more books. As long as they take good care of these resources, more will come,” she said.
She also mentioned upcoming Lions International activities, emphasizing their commitment to serving communities. “This year, we’re also addressing hunger. On December 24, we’ll partner with others to provide health screenings, food, and clothing for the aged and needy around Dodowa,” she revealed.
The headmistress of Pokrom Nsaba Presby Basic School, Nana Acheampomaa, expressed gratitude, stating that the books would significantly improve literacy at the school. Bertha Dogbeten, another headmistress, also assured that the books would be well-maintained and contribute to sustained literacy improvement.
This donation reaffirms Lions International’s unwavering commitment to empowering youth, bridging literacy gaps, and uplifting educational outcomes for underprivileged communities in Ghana.
