The Catholic Priests in the Accra Archdiocese have retained for a second time running, the football trophy at this year’s Catholic Professional Guilds’ May Day games held at the Mary Mother of Good Counsel Catholic church on Wednesday, 1st May, 2019. The Priests whipped the Catholic Association of Media Professionals – Ghana (CAMP-G) by 4 goals to 1 to retain the trophy which they won after beating CAMP-G last year. They also won the Volleyball and the Tug of Peace tournaments.
The kick-off for the start of the 5th edition of the games themed “Harnessing Our Potential for the Growth of the Church” was performed by His Grace, the Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Catholic Archbishop of the Accra Diocese.
In a sermon during a mass before the games, Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, called on Catholic Workers to exhibit Christ in everything they do at their workplaces so that people will see and glorify God. He said Christ worked hard for six days and rested on the seventh and expects us to do the same. He said that as christians we have set aside the seventh day as a day to go and give thanks to God for blessing us with strength and grace to work for six days.
He told the congregation that God has given us an assignment to build the church and we must do it faithfully and to His glory so He blesses us. He said that the work of the Church is not only for a select few but requires the input of each and everyone adding that everyone has a unique talent and ability which is needed in building the church.
The Co-ordinator of the Catholic Professionals Guilds, Mr Edward Ayem, called on catholic professionals in the church to come together to support the priests and religious in building the church. He noted that the May Day event was one of the programmes designed to identify and bring together the various professionals in the catholic church to network, share ideas, and help one another and the church as a whole to grow.
Other Guilds that took part in the programme included the Health Professionals, the Lawyers’ Guild, the Finance Professionals, the Engineers and Architects Guild, Security Professionals, Creative Arts Professionals, Hospitality Professionals, Human Resource and Management Professionals, Association of Catholic Teachers, IT Professionals, Artisans, as well as Body Grooming and Fitness Professionals
There was also a business fair at the event aimed at giving catholics the opportunity to showcase their products and services.
Other games played at the event included Table Tennis.
