A retired school master has suggested the establishment of a "Police-Commando" force to curb the activities of highway hijackers and armed robbers in the country.
The ex-teacher, who would like to remain anonymous for security reasons, was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Kwamikrom.
He said such a force should be a secret organisation in civilian dress, well trained and equipped with sophisticated arms. They could also be deployed to travel and operate on public and private buses to combat highway robbery.
The ex-teacher said the main assignment of such a group would be to "shoot and kill" on sight any armed robbers who may emerge from bushes after they have mounted road blocks.
He said since Ghana was no longer seriously implementing capital punishment for criminals and murderers, this was the only way such murderers
could be eliminated from the society.
The ex-teacher cited the example of Israel where Palestinian terrorists were attacking public buses in the 1960's; the Commando method was applied by the Jewish State to end the menace.
He suggested to drivers to avoid travelling during the night and urged passengers to operate through banks instead of carrying huge sums of money on them while travelling.
