The Institute of Chartered Economists of Ghana (ICEG) has organised its 2018 Economists Conference at the Accra City Hotel in Accra on 22nd November 2018.
The event was held on the theme "Ghana Beyond Aid: Developing Modern Storage Facilities Through ‘One District One Warehouse’ Program".
The conference held dialogues on the feasibility of the ‘One District One Warehouse’ in relation to the Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda, being put in place by government to make it a reality as well as how the project will be financed.
Special Advisor to the Minister for Planning Prof. Gyan Baffour in an interaction with participants at the conference said that apart from the construction of the warehouses in the various districts, about four other projects such as toilet facilities and schools are also being put in place at the same time. He said that this is because aside government priorities there are also constituency needs which have been made known to government through the Members of Parliament.
He emphasized that all the projects are being executed by local contractors. He assured Ghanaians that labour from the various constituencies is being used. He said that announcements were published in the dailies to request for people to bid for the award of contracts to make selection fair.
He disclosed that the warehouses numbering about fifty will be ready in six months for use with an estimated number of fifteen jobs for each warehouse.
Dr Daniel Addo, Chairman, said three elements will account for the success of the ‘One District One Warehouse’ Project namely identifying the strategic imperative, identifying the acceptability of the program as a project and identifying the feasibility of the program.
He said that food wastage across Africa is more than the aid received which puts the construction of the warehouse in a good position for Ghana in order to generate income.
Speaking to the media, Dr Wolanyo Mensah, a fellow of ICEG and an economist said 'Ghana Beyond Aid' requires the promotion of industrialization and productivity. He said that this means that Ghana wouldalso have to take the ‘One District One Warehouse’ Program seriously in order to close the gap between productivity and industrialization and thus improve upon Ghana's socio-economic development. He added "we must improve warehousing because it will serve as a catapult for great industrialization as can be seen in industrialized economies around the world".
Dr Wolanyo said that the project will also help to reduce inflation in the country because harvested produce will be saved which will help the economy grow, solve rural urban migration and reduce unemployment.
Chief Executive Officer for ICEG, Mr Gideon Amissah said that they are pleased that government has committed to the completion of the warehouses, which he described as inspiration and a reasonable expectation .
The event also saw the induction of 5 new members as Chartered Economists (CEs) and 2 new fellows into the Institute. They were admonished to take
the Code of Ethics of the Institute very seriously.
