The Or Foundation’s Material Research and Development department exists to develop new business models, tools, materials, products, and services that create living wage jobs and stop post-consumer textiles from becoming waste and driving people into debt.
The production manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the various workflows that enable the transformation of large volumes of secondhand clothing waste into value-added products. These processes include collection, sorting, shredding, fiberboard production and product manufacturing. Key responsibilities include ensuring production efficiency, maintaining quality standards, and promoting a safe working environment. This role requires strong leadership skills, excellent organizational abilities, a commitment to fostering teamwork among staff, and the ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The production manager will work closely with production, engineering and facilities teams to achieve production goals, implement process improvements, and meet customer expectations as well as serve as a mentor to develop transferable skills among our internal team and community apprentices.
Job Description:
Production Oversight:
Supervise and coordinate daily production activities to ensure output meets established targets across collection, sorting, baling, shredding and fiberboard processes.
Monitor workflows, schedules, maintenance and resources to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
Address and resolve production issues in a timely manner. Put preventive measures in place when possible to avoid recurrence.
Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency across MRD production processes.
Collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams to implement new technologies or upgrades.
Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop action plans to achieve targets.
Quality Assurance:
Ensure all process inputs and outputs meet established quality standards and specifications.
Work closely with the product development team to identify and address defects or process deviations.
Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality.
Safety Compliance:
Enforce safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
Conduct regular safety inspections and address potential hazards promptly.
Provide training to staff on workplace safety and emergency procedures.
Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance health and safety protocols and procedures across processes.
Team Leadership:
Manage and mentor floor staff, including operators, technicians, and supervisors.
Conduct regular team meetings to communicate goals, provide updates, and address concerns.
Promote a positive work environment that encourages collaboration and accountability
Reporting:
Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly production reports to management.
Track and report on production metrics and community impact, including efficiency, waste, and downtime.
Maintain accurate records of employee attendance, equipment performance, and inventory usage.
