Humans are innately curious and we're surrounded by people and things that pique our interest. Maybe a cute pair of shoes catches your eye while scrolling through your social media newsfeeds. Or it could be a friend's houseplant that you need to know the name of. Or perhaps you just have to have that fun mug from the coffee shop.
Thanks to advances in technology, satisfying your curiosity by using an image to search to find more information is easy. Via a "reverse image search" on a computer or smartphone, you can find people, places and things that are in the picture.
Much like going to the Google landing page and typing in a search query, you can do the same with an image.
There are two ways to search an image on Google's website:
You can upload or link an image using the camera icon at the end of the search bar.
You can type in a text search and click to see the image results. Find the photo and click on it to expand it. Then, click on the camera icon on the bottom left of that image.
If you upload an image of a celebrity, for example: Dolly Parton on the red carpet, the results will show:
Her name and the names of any other known person who is also in the photo.
Other websites that use that picture.
Similar images, like someone wearing an outfit that looks the same or someone standing against the same background.
Google Lens searches the whole image by default, but you can adjust the parameters to focus on a specific area of the picture, like Dolly Parton's shoes or a purse.
The search works for more than just celebrities. If you upload pictures of yourself or your friend, the results will show you where else on the internet the original picture might be or images of people who look similar. If you upload an image of an animal, a plant or a cute outfit, Google Lens will scan it and do its best to identify the breed, the plant or the places to buy the outfit or one that's similar. Plus, it'll show you the price, so you can score the best deal on it.
The simplest way to reverse search an image on Google is to use the Google app. The free app works on Android and iPhone devices.
To do a reverse image search on your phone:
Open the Google app.
Tap the camera on the search bar.
You can take a photo in real time or upload it from your photo library.
Adjust the area of the image it searches as needed.
Browse the results.
Much like the web search engine, the app has the Google Lens software to make searching images a breeze. In addition to searching images, the app can help with homework, translate languages, identify plants and more.
