This penultimate round of the season could decide the Riders' Championship, as Prima Pramac's Martin holds a 17-point advantage over Bagnaia in his quest to win the title for the first time in his career.
However, Bagnaia – the reigning double world champion – has the momentum heading into Malaysia after he claimed victory in the full-length race in Thailand this past weekend, and he will be aiming to close the gap (or perhaps even move into the lead himself!) as the season finale in Valencia draws ever closer.
"In terms of championship, not too much. But in terms of feeling, in terms of mental side, it was very important - not just for me, but also for him," said 'Pecco' of his triumph in wet and treacherous conditions.
“So, it’s a good day for us for everything. And the 17 [points] that is the gap is a good number for me. It was a day to make the difference and luckily we did it. I knew it was important that I finished first rather than second to gain more points for the championship.”
Martin, meanwhile, came home in second place and admitted that seeing Marc Marquez crash out of the race in front of him helped his championship cause.
“I went wide in corner three and Pecco and Marc overtook me. Then I tried to stay close to them because I thought about a potential move at the end of the race,” explained Martin.
“But as soon as Marc crashed I also lost the front the same as him. But I was able to save it. I went wide, I was able to save that crash and at that point I was able to control the distance to Jack [Miller] and to Pedro [Acosta] because they were coming strong.”
He added: “I had a lot of moments during the race. I was always really close to crashing. So, I was always ready to save it. I saw Marc lose the front, so then I was prepared to lose the front also. So, that’s how I saved it. I think without Marc in front of me I would have crashed. So thanks to that… I’m sorry for him for sure, but thanks to the crash I was able to understand and anticipate a bit.”
