As part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Week, the company has organized a beach clean-up and waste recovery exercise at the Mighty Beach in Sakumono, Tema in partnership with McKingtorch Africa and Bus Stop Boyz.
The exercise brought together MTN staff, volunteers, and environmental advocates to recover and sort waste materials for recycling.
The initiative formed part of MTN’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable community engagement under its Project Zero agenda, which seeks to promote waste reduction and renewable practices across its operations.
Speaking at the event, Rhoderlyn Entsua Mensah, Manager for Sustainability at MTN Ghana, explained that the activity was part of day four of the company’s Sustainability Week. She noted that MTN staff joined hands with their partners to “recover waste that can be recycled” and to demonstrate practical ways of protecting the environment.
She also called on the public to embrace sustainable living by segregating waste at home and at work, and ensure recyclable materials did not end up in landfills or water bodies. “If sustainability becomes personal to you as an individual, it goes a long way to address the national problem of waste management,” she said.
Makafui Awuku, Founder and CEO of McKingtorch Africa, emphasized the significance of the exercise, noting that the waste found along the beachfront originated largely from city storm drains that carried uncollected litter to the sea. He explained that the effort went beyond a routine clean-up, describing it instead as a “waste recovery operation” aimed at diverting usable materials from landfills into recycling programs.
The cleanup teams were assigned to collect specific waste streams including plastics, styrofoam, leather items such as shoes, and glass waste which would later be processed and repurposed through partner recycling channels.
