About 20 women engaged in petty trading in Kumasi have benefited from a 3000 Ghana cedis loan facility from the African Women Development Fund, (AWDF).
The loan, which attracts an interest rate of 15 per cent is meant to increase trading capital for women and subsequently enhance economic empowerment among them.
It was facilitated by Needy Women's Association (NWA), a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Kumasi.
Madam Sarah Afful, President of NWA, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday said women were the bread winners of most families, but unfortunately they faced serious economic constraints which directly affected their immediate families.
She said AWDF was a micro credit facility, which sought to help enhance trading among women and the vulnerable in the society.
Madam Afful said NWA was also formed in 2005 with a mission to help vulnerable women to build their capacity and reduce poverty among them.
She said NWA also educated the women on sexually transmitted diseases and reproductive health.
"We also have non formal education for women and also educate them on some government policies so they could make informed choices," she noted.
She said women contributed a lot to the development of the economy and called on the government to identify vulnerable women in the society and empower them economically.
