Yemeni police said it foiled on Wednesday a planned bomb attack on a local Islamic bank in southern Yemen, the ruling General People's Congress reported on its website.
According to the report published by almotamar net, the police arrested a man in possession of large quantities of explosives while roaming nearby the Islamic Bank in Aden before carrying out the attack.
The man confessed he hid more ready-for-use explosives in a house at the same area. He told interrogators he was behind several bomb attacks
against ATM machines in the governorate of Aden.
However, Yemeni security said it is yet to say whether the defendant is a pro-al-Qaida terrorist or a member of the opposing Southern Movement.
Yemen's Interior Ministry said Wednesday it placed security forces in the southern provinces of Abyan, Shabwa and al-Baidha, on alert for probable retaliation by al-Qaida terrorists following last week's crackdown.
On Thursday, Yemeni officials said security forces backed by warplanes killed at least 34 al-Qaida militants in raids against hideouts in the southern province of Abyan and sites in Arhab district in Sanaa. The troops also arrested 17 al-Qaida suspects in the course of the operations.
