Some 96 senior high school graduates from the Kwahu North District who were successful in interviews conducted by principals of six training colleges in the Eastern Region have been selected for admission.
The institutions are the Presbyterian Training College at Akropong, Mount Mary Training, Somanya, Presbyterian Women's Training College at Aburi, Presbyterian Training College, Kyebi, Abetifi Training College and the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Training College in Koforidua.
The interviews were conducted for over 200 applicants drawn from the district at an educational forum held at Donkorkrom following media reports that about 200 basic school classrooms in the district are without teachers.
The district assembly will pay for the admission forms of the applicants at the cost of GHC 30 each.
Mr. Gabriel Adu, Kwahu North District Director of Education, said the area, which formed one third of the Eastern Region land area, has 88 kindergartens, 144 primary, 45 junior high two senior high and one technical schools with a total enrolment of 32,857 pupils.
He said that high school children population was being taught by only 868 teachers out of which 577 were untrained.
Mr. Adu said that had led to the fallen standard of education in the district and expressed optimism that the intervention would remedy the situation.
Mr Samuel Ofosu- Ampofo, Eastern Regional Minister, advised those who would gain admission to the institutions to return to the district to give back what the society had given them to help improve the standard of education in the area.
He commended principals of the six institutions and the Regional Education Directorate for their cooperation and immediate intervention to solve teaching problems in the district.
