The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as a towering figure in global interfaith harmony and a moral beacon for the world.
In a message of condolence to the leadership of the Catholic Church in Ghana and the Vatican, the revered Muslim cleric acknowledged the deep impact Pope Francis had on the Abrahamic religious fraternity and the broader international community. The message dated April 22, 2025, was signed by Dr. Mohammed Marzuq Abubakari Azindoo, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam.
“The passing of the Pontiff is a great loss to the global interfaith community, particularly the Abrahamic fraternity,” the Chief Imam stated.
“The world would, forever, remember an icon whose voice helped shape international order in many areas of life: from moral leadership to human rights championship.”
The Chief Imam commended Pope Francis for his unwavering advocacy for the marginalised, noting that his final public statements included a plea for peace and an end to the atrocities in Gaza.
“Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis stood for the marginalised. It was, therefore, not surprising that on the eve of his departure to eternity, he called for an end to the atrocities in Gaza,” the statement read.
The Chief Imam also highlighted the Pope’s unique ability to bridge the divide between religious orthodoxy and modernity, praising him for “striking a reasonable balance between orthodoxy in service to God and modernity in service to humanity.”
The Chief Imam further expressed hope that Pope Francis’ dedication to environmental sustainability would continue to inspire global efforts in combating the climate crisis, describing his ecological message as one rooted in faith and justice.
The National Chief Imam also prayed for a peaceful and divinely guided Papal Conclave, one that will “produce a successor of equal honour.”
