A Tree Planting Activity at Aburi Gardens
Daughters of the Middle Passage (DMP) is collaborating with the Black Star Pearls (BSP) of Ghana, an interest group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on another tree planting exercise (first initiated in 2023 by BSP) to mark Earth Day 2025. The program provides children from deprived communities the opportunity to experience the great outdoors, while learning the importance of protecting Mother Earth through a tree planting exercise.
On Tuesday, April 22nd, 108 coconut seedlings will be planted at the Aburi Botanical Gardens. This is a collaborative project between BSP and DMP. Other partners include Planet Waves with Aburi Botanical Gardens serving as host.
The purpose of the tree planting exercise is for the students to understand the importance of our environment and to be engaged in learning about some of the the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Following the tree planting exercise, students will learn more about the following SDGs, which include:
? SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
? SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
? SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
? SDG 13: Climate Action
After taking so much from Mother Earth, April 22nd was set aside in 1970 to inspire mankind to take action to protect the planet. Our waters are being polluted, species are becoming extinct and extreme weather conditions are causing disruption to our ecosystems and livelihoods. There are three major environmental crises we are currently facing which include: Pollution, Biodiversity Loss, and Climate Change.
