A police operation targeting illegal mining activities in the Western Region has resulted in the arrest of 47 people and the seizure of excavators, weapons, and other equipment.
The intelligence-led operation, which started April 17, 2025 lasted four days.
It was carried out within the Samreboi enclave and surrounding areas along the Tano River, including the Aboi, Subri and Nimiri forests.
According to the Police, the suspects include 39 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals.
Items recovered during the operation include 17 excavators, one bulldozer, four motorbikes, two Toyota Hilux vehicles, one Toyota Rav4, and eight pumping machines.
Police also retrieved firearms, comprising four pump action guns, a single-barrel gun, and 54 live BB cartridges.
In an update issued on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the Ghana Police Service stated that 41 of the suspects were arraigned before court the same day.
Of that number, 29 were remanded into custody to reappear on 30 April, while 12 were remanded to return to court on 2 May.
The remaining seven suspects are expected to appear before court on Wednesday, 23 April.
In a related development, the Police Administration has also reassigned several divisional and district commanders in areas affected by illegal mining.
The reshuffle involves officers in the Eastern, Western, and Western North regions.
According to the statement, the changes are part of internal efforts to strengthen police presence in areas where galamsey operations remain widespread.
The Ghana Police Service indicated that it will continue with operations aimed at clamping down on unauthorised mining activities across the country.
