Sharon Ayertey Yomle is the owner of Yomle foods. She is a young Ghanaian innovator who is adding value to gari and other local foods. There are other entrepreneurs in this type of business. But Yomle foods brings a variety of value-added foods to the market.
Sharon Ayertey Yomle hails from Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region. She is a product of Krobo Girls senior high school in the Eastern region of Ghana. She holds a bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Cape Coast in 2019.
According to Sharon, her wish was to secure a corporate job after school. However, she had a change of mind when she attended the British Council and Giz Jobs for Africa incubation program. This was where her business idea was born. Sharon took the risk of starting her own enterprise after taking advice from the program. She started small with the little resources she had. Sharon’s first product was Yommy Soya gari which was welcomed on the market. Later, she added the Soya gari mix, Tom brown, Rice cereal mix, and Ginger powder.
Just like many start-ups, Yomle foods also encountered some challenges. For Sharon, the cost of raw materials and packaging materials, and market entry have been major issues. She however acknowledged the Ghana Enterprise agency for providing entrepreneurial support to young businesses.
Sharon has called on the government to provide support to the soya bean value chain to help small-scale businesses to flourish. In the face of Ghana’s economic crisis, there have been calls on the government to support local food production to boost the economy.
Yomle foods aims to be a sustainable food production hub that will give more income to rural farmers and women in Ghana.
