The 27th Zonta International District 18 Conference has come off in Accra, Ghana, with a call to action to empower women and girls in Africa. The conference, themed "Realizing Equality: Building for an Even Brighter Future for Women and Girls in Africa," brought together over 250 delegates from across the continent and beyond.
In her opening remarks, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls through education and economic opportunities. She commended Zonta International for its commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. "As a nation, we recognize the critical role women play in our development, and we are committed to creating an enabling environment for them to thrive," she added.
Zonta International President Salla Tuominen highlighted the organization's mission to create a better world for women and girls. She emphasized the need for sustainability, spirit, and speaking up for human rights, particularly in a world where rights were still denied and voices silenced. "As Zontians, we must continue to advocate for policies and programs that support women's empowerment and gender equality," she said.
UNICEF Representative Osama Makkawi Khogali highlighted the organization's partnership with Zonta International in advancing the rights of women and girls in Ghana. He noted that despite progress made in reducing child marriage, more needed to be done to protect the rights of girls and women. "We commend Zonta International for its commitment to empowering girls and women, particularly in STEM fields," he noted.
Her Excellency, Shirley Ayorkor-Botchwey, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, in a video message, highlighted the organization's commitment to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. "The brighter future we envision for Africa's women and girls will not be built without them," she said. "We must work together to create opportunities for women and girls to thrive and lead."
The Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Zainab Hawa Bangura, also in a video message, commended Zonta International for its transformative service across Africa. She emphasized the importance of education, empowerment, and protection of women and girls.
The conference featured a presentation on Zonta's STEM initiative, aimed at supporting young girls and women in STEM fields. The initiative, launched in 2019, had already provided scholarships to deserving women and girls. The District 18 STEM committee chairperson, Yaa Okudzeto, announced that the district had rolled out a project to support 50 students at the Koforidua Technical University, providing them with tuition, tools, and skills training.
