An ultra- modern Dog Training School for the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division was inaugurated at Dawhenya in the Greater Accra region.
The school complex comprised of a dog clinic, a breeding kennel, classrooms for officers handling the dogs, kitchen, duty posts, pantry, changing rooms, and puppy rooms.
The facility is constructed under the Danish International Development Agency(DANIDA)-sponsored Re-designed Tax and Development Programme.
The school will provide for the training of dogs on the detection of narcotics, currency and explosives and for the tracking of wanted criminals.
A speech read on behalf of the Mr Kweku Kwarteng, the Deputy Minister of Finance said the ceremony demonstrated the deepening relationship between Ghana and Denmark.
He said the co-operation between the two countries would move from Aid to trade, adding that Denmark support for the facility would lead to increasing benefits of international trade.
"The facility has come at a good time, when government is doing all it can to combat illicit trade and narcotic fights in all fronts and boost revenue generation".
He commended the Denmark government for the support and pledged government's commitment to maintain the facility in an efficient manner.
Mr Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, the Commisioner General of GRA said the school would assist in Customs Preventive Operations at the ports, airports and help in effective patrols in checking smuggling.
DANIDA has completed a residential facility for trainers and trainees at the GRA Academy in Kpetoe, and Ho in the Volta region.
He said since 2015, the Danish government supported GRA in its modernisation efforts and assured them of instilling a good maintenance culture to ensure that the infrastructure was well kept.
Retired Colonel Kwadwo Damoah, the Commissioner in charge of Customs Division said DANIDA over the years donated 21 vehicles, laptops, office furniture and equipment to the Authority to improve its operations.
Mrs Bridget Lacour Madson, the Deputy Ambassador of Denmark to Ghana said the initiative was part of the objectives for the development cooperation between the two countries under the GRA strategic plan from 2015 to 2017.
She said the facility would help strengthen the capacity of officers to stop Revenue leakage in the country.
Mr Maurizio Zincone, Team Leader, DANIDA Re-sdesigned Tax and Development Programme said their outfit as part of the strategic plan completed 24 projects, stressing that the facility would contribute to the country's security and revenue generation.
