At its primaries held in Kumasi, the Oforikrom Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected Elizabeth Agyemang, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) to represent the party.
She polled 54 votes as against 37 of her only contender, Mrs Vesta Adu-Gyamfi, a Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Out of the 100 eligible voters, 91 were present to cast their votes while nine were absent.
Two other contestants, Dr Abdul Rauf and Alex Ayonkoma earlier stepped down and gave their support to Mrs Vesta Adu-Gyamfi.
The election, which was held amid heavy security was characterized by funfair and merry-making by supporters of the two contestants who thronged the venue to support their respective aspirants.
The election hall was thrown into wild jubilation immediately the incumbent MP was declared winner, bringing proceedings to a temporary halt for a couple of minutes.
Dr Kwame Asuobonteng, First Vice Regional Chairman of the party entreated the followers of the contestants to burry their differences and unite for the task ahead.
He said factionalism among the members of the party could prove detrimental since the battle was between the party and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mrs Adu-Gyamfi who accepted defeat in good faith urged the winner to provide the needed leadership that could unite the opposing supporters to ensure victory for the party.
Mrs Agyemang thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in her and promised to retain the seat for the party.
