The manager of Ghana’s rising welterweight sensation, George "Stopper" Mensah, has taken a decisive step to secure his fighter’s future, signing a pivotal contract while voicing concerns over the lack of credible opponents hindering Mensah’s progress.
In an exclusive interview with the Graphic Sports, Samuel Agyei Darkwah revealed that the newly signed agreement is a crucial part of his strategy to propel Mensah to world title status.
However, he lamented the scarcity of willing challengers in Ghana, warning that it could stall the boxer’s development.
"Stopper is Ghana’s best hope of reclaiming a world title," he declared. "But the lack of boxers ready to face him in the ring is holding him back."
Now armed with a formal contract, Mr Darkwah is calling on the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to implement a structured system for categorising and matching boxers at set intervals. He insists that participation must be mandatory, urging the GBA to impose strict penalties— including potential bans— for fighters who refuse to step up.
"If they truly believe in their abilities, they should have no fear of facing Stopper," he challenged.
The seasoned manager is also advocating for a contractual obligation requiring Ghanaian professional boxers to test themselves against top-tier opposition.
He believes this will sharpen their skills, toughen them for the global stage, and enhance Ghana’s standing in world boxing.
Beyond the competitive aspect, Mr Darkwah is urging the GBA to seize this moment to attract corporate sponsors and key stakeholders.
He stressed the importance of appointing top-level executives to oversee the sport’s growth and ensure that promising talents such as Mensah received the support they needed to succeed.
