Mr Robert Odenke Mensah, the chairman of the Accra Turf Club (ATC), is unhappy with the lack of support for horse-racing in the country.
He said horseracing is the “King of Sports” and needs serious attention to enable it to take its proper position in sports.
According Mr. Mensah, there was the need to invest in the sport to unearth young jockeys and to create more awareness in the sport adding that it would also create employment for the youth.
Mr Mensah, who made the call in an interview with the GNA Sports in Accra, said if the needed support was not given to horseracing it would die a natural death.
He expressed worry that a contract awarded in 2006 for the construction of a new race course, had not been completed and called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to take steps to ensure the commencement of the project.
Mr Mensah noted that the bad state of the race course and the absence of stands for spectators had made the sport unattractive to fans.
The Board of Stewards of the ATC would organize the “Chairman’s Cup” for the second day of the New Year races on Saturday, February 3.
