PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery has praised birthday boy Kylian Mbappe after he scored one goal and assisted another as the French capital outfit closed 2017 with a 3-1 home win over Caen in Ligue 1 on Wednesday.
The France international teed up Edinson Cavani for the first half opener before scoring the second himself after Giovani Lo Celso set him up in the second half and Yuri Berchiche completed the scoring for PSG from a Neymar pass.
Ivan Santini scored a late consolation effort for Caen from the penalty spot and Emery was not happy about that but he was pleased with Mbappe.
"Of course, it was a good thing to win our final match of the year," Emery said post-match. "Caen defended well but we managed to score, even if we could have had more and especially should not have conceded. I think that the supporters were treated to an attractive game.
"The team worked well. I am pleased for Kylian, who celebrated his 19th birthday with a goal and an assist -- he made a great contribution."
Berchiche's goal to make it 3-0 was his first since his summer move from Real Sociedad but the Basque left back preferred to praise Neymar for his assist rather than take all of the credit.
"It was important to finish the year on a positive note," said Berchiche. "We are happy to have won in front of our fans before going on holiday to spend some time with our families.
"Of course, I am very pleased to have scored, it is my first goal at Parc des Princes -- that means something.
"Neymar saw me and set me up nicely. I really have to thank him because I did not have to do much more than just hit the ball to score!"
Lo Celso was impressive in midfield and assisted Mbappe's second half effort and the Argentina international was full of praise for his teammate's finish.
The South American emphasised the collective element of the win over Caen, though, and not just his role in one of the three strikes.
"We go on holiday with a sense of accomplishment," Lo Celso said. "It was important to win here.
"For Kylian's goal, I was ahead of play and I could see him hitting full stride. The rest was his talent and that made the difference.
"Do not forget about Edinson and Yuri's goals too. The team did a great job and now we will resume action in 2018 in top form."
PSG will spend a few days in Doha, Qatar, later this week before finally heading home to join up with their families for the Christmas period.
