THE Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building an inclusive and equitable justice system that upholds the rights and dignity of women and girls.
She said the government was ready to work with partners at the national, regional and global levels to dismantle discriminatory laws, challenge harmful social norms and strengthen justice systems in line with international commitments.
Dr. Lartey made the remarks during the general discussion of the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) held in Accra yesterday.
According to her, the government continues to invest in gender-responsive justice systems to ensure women and girls receive fair treatment and protection under the law.
She explained that this includes training judicial officers, law enforcement personnel, social service providers and paralegals, including those operating within market centres, to respond effectively and sensitively to cases involving women and girls.
Dr. Lartey said the government was also intensifying community engagement initiatives to empower women and girls with knowledge of their rights so they could seek redress and demand accountability.
“In addition, Ghana has strengthened efforts to address gender-based violence through institutional reforms and survivor-centred responses,” she stated.
She noted that the establishment of specialised units within the Ghana Police Service and the operationalisation of gender desks at national and local levels were improving reporting, case management and prosecution of gender-based violence cases.
Dr. Lartey said although progress had been made, more needed to be done to ensure women and girls had full access to justice.
She noted that Ghana had implemented several legal and policy reforms, including the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121), the National Gender Policy (2025–2034), the Social Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1148), and the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), to protect the rights of women and girls.
