A new nationwide survey by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Ghana and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) suggests that many Ghanaians believe the fight against corruption under the Mahama administration has improved.
The study, titled “Stocktaking of Ghana’s Democracy,” assessed public perceptions of governance, democratic values and political leadership in Ghana.
The data collection released on Wednesday, March 11, coincided with the first year of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Dramani Mahama.
According to the findings, the most frequently selected response across demographic groups indicated that corruption has improved, suggesting that anti-corruption efforts by the government are being recognised by a section of the public.
“Perceptions of corruption trends provide another noteworthy insight. Across demographic groups, including different age categories, genders, and education levels, the most frequently selected response is that corruption has improved.
“Although this view is not universal, the pattern suggests that government anti-corruption efforts are being recognised by a significant portion of the population,” the survey said.
The survey, which coincided with the first year of the government led by President John Dramani Mahama, also assessed citizens’ views on the administration’s performance.
Respondents generally offered a cautiously positive assessment, with the largest share describing the government’s overall performance as good or satisfactory.
Economic management also received mixed but largely favourable ratings, with 44.5 percent of respondents describing it as good and 14.9 percent rating it as excellent.
Despite these relatively positive evaluations, the study shows that Ghanaians continue to place strong emphasis on integrity in public leadership.
Respondents consistently ranked a strong commitment to fighting corruption among the most important qualities they expect from a presidential candidate, alongside visionary leadership and sound economic management.
