The Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs has warned of possible unrest if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) annuls the February 7 Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.
The warning follows calls by the Majority Caucus in Parliament for the nullification of the primary, which was won by former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, amid allegations of vote buying. Mr. Jamal has denied the claims, including accusations that he shared television sets and offered bribes to delegates.
The NDC has since constituted a committee to investigate the allegations.
Addressing journalists on Monday, February 9, the Zongo Chiefs urged the party leadership to respect the will of the delegates and to support Baba Jamal, insisting that he was duly elected in a credible process.
“Nima has to be united, and already Nima is united. If they say they are going to cancel the elections, do they know what is going to happen? So let us keep the result as it is. It’s only God who knows who is clean.
“We’re appealing to them to leave it as it is. Had it been a different person who won the election, we, the chiefs, would have gone with him. So we are one people and one destiny. We are bringing our heads together with the winner of the election to work hand in hand.
“Because we have seen no reason why they should cancel the election. If the result is kept the way it is, I think we will live peacefully,” they appealed.
