A member of the Bono Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Dabie Appiah, has urged the party leadership to ensure that the NPP’s Election 2028 presidential primary is conducted fairly, devoid of biases.
He said based on his assessment of the campaigns of the presidential aspirants so far, the former Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was tipped to win the party’s presidential primary, slated for January 31, 2025.
The former Vice-President is contesting the primary with former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyapong, and the MP for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong.
Mr Appiah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Odomase in the Sunyani West Constituency that various presidential aspirants of the party required equal playing fields in the electoral process, from campaign to voting, and counting to declaration of results.
He argued that the Ghanaian electorate preferred Dr Bawumia to the other aspirants and reminded the NPP electorate that, “voting for any other hopeful than Bawumia would spell doom for the party in 2028 election.”
Mr Appiah indicated that all the presidential hopefuls had the capacity to become the party’s 2028 flag bearer.
“However, we must allow the interest of the Ghanaian voter to supersede our party interest to be able to win the next general election,” he cautioned.
“Presently, Bawumia is the favourite of the Ghanaian electorate, and we must make informed decisions, endorse him to make it easier for the NPP to regain political power,” he stressed.
Mr Appiah expressed the hope that all things being equal, the delegates would not disappoint Dr Bawumia and the NPP in general, but rather choose him to lead the party to a resounding victory in 2028.
The former Organiser of NPP in the then Brong-Ahafo Region, popularly known in the political space as “Orga” also urged the presidential hopefuls to remain decorous in their campaigns as they canvass for the votes of the party’s delegates.
He emphasised that the NPP required clean campaigns from the aspirants to build a formidable force after the primary for the 2024 election. — GNA.
