The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Taskforce on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
In a statement dated October 30, 2025, issued by the Parliamentary Service and signed by the Director of Media Relations, David Sebastian Damoah. It was explained that the President of the IPU cited Mr Bagbin’s integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust among parties in conflict as the basis for his selection.
Mr Bagbin joins seven other parliamentarians on the Taskforce, with membership drawn from all six geopolitical groups of the IPU.
“We are confident that your leadership and experience will strengthen the work of the Taskforce in its mission to support diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine,” the IPU Secretary-General, Martin Chungong, stated in a letter announcing the appointment.

The Taskforce, which was set up as an ad-hoc body in March 2022, enables the Union to use its influence to foster dialogue between parliamentarians in Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
Since its formation, it has held at least thirteen meetings and conducted a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022.
The group has also maintained periodic consultations with parliamentary delegations from both Ukraine and Russia every six months during IPU Assemblies.
As a member of the Taskforce, Mr Bagbin will participate in meetings during IPU Assemblies, attend hearings and discussions with the Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and engage in dialogue with government leaders from both sides of the conflict.
The statement described the Taskforce as one of the few remaining platforms where Ukrainian and Russian lawmakers continue to meet and exchange views, at a time when opportunities for dialogue are increasingly limited.
It added that Mr Bagbin’s extensive experience in peace mediation and parliamentary diplomacy would strengthen the group’s efforts to promote dialogue and mutual understanding.
The overarching goal of the Taskforce is to help end the conflict in Ukraine through sustained diplomatic engagement and parliamentary dialogue.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union, established in 1889, is the global organisation of national parliaments and currently has 180 member parliaments and 15 associate members.
