Mr George Mawuli, the Ahafo Regional Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has called for stakeholder support to stem the practice of co-payments in the region.
He expressed worry that co-payment (illegal collection of medical bills) from registered members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by some service providers was seriously affecting the scheme's new registration and renewals.
"Many members of the scheme are losing interest because of the co-payments", Mr Mawuli stated at a stakeholder's engagement organized by the NHIA at Hwidiem in the Asutifi South District of the Region.
The day's meeting was attended by staff of the NHIA from the six administrative districts and municipalities as well as other stakeholders in the region.
Mr Mawuli alleged that "some service providers continue charging and collecting illegal bills from clients of the scheme", describing the practice as challenging and rallied the support of stakeholders to stem it.
He said the NHIA in the region was doing its best to tackle the problem, urging support from stakeholders for members of the scheme to derive the optimum benefit.
Dr Mrs Akosua Agyeiwaa Owusu Sarpong, the Ahafo Regional Director of Health, stressed the need for effective collaboration towards tackling emerging challenges confronting the health sector and to improve health outcomes in the region.
