The International Labour Organisation has begun a 3-day training of trainers for personnel of Security and Child Protection Agencies in Ghana on Child Labour and Social Welfare Information Management Systems (SWIMS).
The training, under the ILO’s ACCEL AFRICA Project, seeks to build the capacity of law enforcement and child protection agencies to prevent and protect exploitation of children.
It also aims to strengthen policy formulation, coordination, monitoring and the implementation of the National Plan of Action for the Elimination of Child Labour and Human Trafficking in Ghana.
Mr. Bismark Quartey, Ghana National Project Coordinator for the ACCEL Project, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, explained that the training activity falls under the ACCEL Africa objective of collaborating through knowledge sharing with security agencies.
“This training brings together personnel from diverse backgrounds and institutions which are key agents in the fight against child labour. For us to be able to accelerate our efforts in ending child labour, we need all security and child protection agencies to work together to ensure that one component we are lacking which is enforcement is being achieved,” he stated.
Despite the number of awareness-raising and sensitisation campaigns, children are being exploited on cocoa farms and in mining communities.
Through this series of training, the Security and Child Protection agencies will be well-equipped to apply the skills learned to enhance their work and extend the training to other colleagues within their organisation.
