The University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has sworn into office, Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah as the second Vice Chancellor, at an investiture ceremony in Accra yesterday.
Prof. Mensah, a scholar in rhetoric and media studies, has spent most of his career in teaching communication and rose through the ranks to the present position.
The Council Chair of UniMAC, Emeritus Prof. Kwesi Yankah, administered the oath of office to the new VC.
In a remark, Prof. Mensah pledged to uphold the mission of UniMAC to become a centre of excellence.
He stated that he would ensure the availability of qualified academic and management staff, build infrastructure, ensure sufficient teaching and learning materials, and adopt effective strategies to help develop both academic and professional competencies.
“My vision for UniMAC encapsulated in “HiRePoFiS,” focusing on human resource development, infrastructure, research, policy, financial sustainability, and stakeholder engagement. Central to this vision is integrating Artificial Intelligence into the curriculum, preparing students to use AI ethically, ensuring UniMAC remains a leader in higher education,” he said.
The new Vice Chancellor explained that academic institutions needed to attract and maintain qualified people, saying that “an effective way to attract and retain quality staff is to create an environment where people can develop, people will get the opportunity to work.”
He however, highlighted the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges, stating that “Challenges are inevitable, but we must continue to press forward and not rest on past glory.”
He urged the university’s leadership to remain committed to the values of unity, integrity, and excellence as they work towards the realisation of the institution’s vision.
“With an enthusiastic and passionate team of faculty, staff, and students, UniMAC is primed for a future of growth, excellence, and innovation. I am confident that, together, we will continue to shape the next generation of media, arts, and communication professionals who will go on to make a positive difference in society,” he said.
Emeritus Prof. Kwesi Yankah said UniMAC was not just a hub for academic learning, but a place where ideas flourish, empowering the next generation of change makers.
“The university looks forward to an even brighter future, one marked by academic excellence, innovation, and a continued commitment to shaping the future of education and society,” he added.
