The contractor working on the rehabilitation of the Half Assini Catholic Primary and Junior High School has abandoned the site despite assurances that the school would be ready for use when the academic year starts.
Mr Paul Whaja, chairman of the PTA and the Rev Father John Effeh, local manager of Catholic Schools in the Jomoro District, told the GNA in an interview that the fate of the children was hanging in the balance.
They said there was no hope the two buildings would be ready for use when school re-open and the children would have no place to attend classes.
They said the rehabilitation, costing GH¢41,277.84, was started in 2008 and is presently 50 percent complete but the contractor left the site five months ago.
The project, which involves re-roofing, replacement of doors and windows and electrical installation are being financed under the GETFund.
The school is the Alma Marta of late President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
They said when the work started, both the primary and the JSS were asked to move to a temporary place that was not suitable for teaching and learning but with the hope that work would be completed early enough for the children to return.
Mr Whaja and the Rev Fr Effeh said before school vacated recently, the children had brought back their desks, tables and chairs to the uncompleted building since the contractor had left the site.
Mr Thomas Amankwatia Essuman, the District Engineer of the Jomoro District Assembly, said the contract was awarded by the Western Regional offices of the AESC in Takoradi and the Jomoro District Assembly had little knowledge about the projects.
