Authorities of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have organized a week-long road safety and driving techniques for 50 drivers including two fuel auditing assistants of the University.
The programme is to upgrade their knowledge in modern road safety measures, vehicle maintenance and the use of electronic cars.
Mr John Reeves Aidoo, a facilitator from the Road Safety and Transportation Consultancies (RSTC), took the participants through vehicle maintenance, vehicle inspection and road signs.
He said as professional drivers, there was the need to always inspect their vehicles properly before they moved them onto the road.
Mr Aidoo urged the drivers not to check the engine oil alone but also ensure that other parts of the vehicle, especially the tyres, brakes, wipers, lights and the horn were in good condition.
He attributed most accidents on our roads to the purchase of inferior vehicle spare parts.
Prof. Mawutor Avoke, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the UEW, advised the drivers to change their attitude to work and ensure that they worked within the regulations governing their profession.
He expressed management's preparedness to help the drivers upgrade their knowledge and ensure professional discipline.
Mr Godfred Akyea-Darkwah, Chief Executive Officer of the Road Safety and Transportation Consultancies Limited (RSTC), expressed his outfit's preparedness to organize a football competition and road safety quiz for all the six public Universities.
He urged the drivers to constantly read the vehicle manual to enable them to know all parts and their usage.
Mr Elvis Kwesi Andoh, Chief Transport Officer of the University, thanked management for upgrading the skills of the drivers.
He called on the drivers to make use of the course materials given them and share the knowledge with others.
