Mr. Michael Pentsil, Assistant Regional Manager of the Forest Services Division, on Wednesday said the Forestry Commission (FC) is considering a new policy on lumber to help check chainsaw operations.
About 80 per cent of lumber on the market are "chainsaw lumber" although chainsaw operations are still illegal in the country.
He was speaking on the National Forest Plantation Development Programme at a one-day Regional Forestry Forum at Takoradi.
The forum was organized by the Care International and the FC with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
He said 30,000 hectares of forest plantations have been targeted for cultivation under the programme in 100 districts this year.
Mr. Pentsil said 10,000 hectares of the target are expected to be cultivated in the Western Region.
He said the programmed would be implemented in all the 170 districts in the country next year.
