Accra’s Silverbird Cinemas came alive on Wednesday, September 10, with a private screening of The Fisherman, a Ghanaian film set to officially premiere on Friday, September 19.
The exclusive preview offered audiences a first look at its mix of humour, culture, and great storytelling.
Written and directed by Zoey Martinson, The Fisherman is produced by Kofi Owusu Afriyie and Korey Jackson.
The Venice Film Festival-winning comedy features a talented cast including Endurance Dedzo, William Lamptey, Kiki Romi, Fred Amugi, Dulo Harris, and Ricky Adelayitar.
The story follows Atta Oko, an aging fisherman determined to own a boat and become the pride of his village.
However, his dream takes a whimsical turn when he encounters a sarcastic, talking fish. Joined by three young “associates,” Oko sets out on a journey from his fishing community to the bustling city of Accra, exploring the tension between tradition and modernity.
The film’s charm comes from its ability to blend laughter, folklore, and Ghanaian identity into a narrative that reflects global themes of resilience, family, friendship, and the struggle to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.
At the screening, actors such as Summarize and Deorize shared how the film’s storyline resonated with their personal lives, emphasizing experiences that mirror its themes of chasing dreams and adapting to change.
Popular dancer, Endurance has received backlash for embracing being too masculine, saying critics mocked her online but she remains unapologetic.
“I also embrace my feminine side. I am very comfortable with it. I like to switch it up depending on how I’m feeling, but most times, I dress as a tomboy and that has been useful for this movie.
“ Audience will appreciate my talent and what I bring on board because ‘The Fisherman’ is all about our culture and daily happenings in our communities, especially interesting tales of our fishing communities,” she said.
