MTN Mobile Money (MML) has launched a nationwide initiative to educate customers about the risks of mobile money fraud and promote safe usage of its mobile money services. The "Shine Your Eye" campaign aims to empower customers with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves from potential scams and fraudsters.
As part of the initiative, MTN MoMo's team visited the Agbogbloshie market in Accra to educate customers on how to safeguard themselves against fraud. The team also used drama skits to demonstrate how fraudsters operate and how customers can protect themselves.
According to Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager for Fintech Commercial at MTN Ghana, the company is committed to safeguarding its customers and blocking millions of suspicious SMS messages that target customers.
He outlined Key Safety Tips for MoMo users to follow namely;
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls or messages from unknown numbers claiming to be from MTN
- Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone
- Don't allow anyone to perform transactions on your behalf
- Don't approve any prompts or transactions you haven't initiated
The Bank of Ghana has reported a significant growth in mobile money adoption, with over 70 million MoMo accounts in the country. While this growth presents opportunities for financial inclusion, it also raises concerns about the risks of mobile money fraud. MTN Ghana's "Shine Your Eye" initiative is part of its efforts to educate users about the importance of security and responsible mobile money usage.
Mr. Abdul-Majeed also noted that MTN MoMo has launched a promotion to reward its customers, with daily, weekly, and monthly winners. However, customers are warned to be cautious of scammers who may claim that they need to pay a fee to redeem their prizes. MTN MoMo assures its customers that nobody will ask them to pay any money to opt-in or redeem a prize.
