Nana Addo Danquah Akufu Addo, Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said by filing a petition to address the irregularities in the Presidential elections, the country's democracy would be strengthened.
"This case is not a personal one. There is a much more important issue which goes to the very heart of our democracy."
He said by the end of the election, "a lot of irregularities got to us, which showed that the election results were not satisfactory".
Nana Akufu Addo, first Plaintiff in the case, said although we made the Electoral Commission (EC) aware of the situation, the attitude of the EC was that ‘you can go to court if you are not satisfied'.
He said in deciding to go to court, "we knew it was a great responsibility, but we have to contribute our quota to national growth."
The NPP flag-bearer said it was reasonable for a few anomalies to be recorded in any election, "but why do they always favor the NDC?"
Nana Akufu Addo said by the court action, "we are strengthening democracy to ensure, that the EC knows it is responsible to the people. We are very confident that by the time the Supreme Court makes its pronouncement, democracy in the country would be stronger."
He urged supporters of the party to remain peaceful, because the party did not believe in violent means.
Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, running mate to Nana Akufu Addo and second plaintiff in the case, said after the biometric registration exercise, we were told there were 13,000,000 registered voters but "after the cleaning exercise, we now had 14,000,000 registered voters."
He said the Pink Sheet at polling stations, which had to be signed by the Presiding Officer, because it contained vital information on the voting process, also revealed a number of irregularities.
"Each Pink Sheet," he said, "should have a unique serial number but we detected Pink Sheets of different polling stations having the same serial number."
He said in several polling stations, it was detected that the Presiding Officer did not sign to acknowledge that the vote was satisfactory.
"One Pink Sheet indicated that 614 people voted without biometric verification," said Dr Bawumia.
He said upon combining all the voting anomalies throughout the country such as voting without verification, Pink Sheets having identical serial numbers and Presiding Officers not signing the final out-come of the results at their respective polling stations, "the number of voting irregularities we had were 1,340,018."
Dr Bawumia said it was the belief of the NPP that if the EC had taken into account all those anomalies, "the NPP would have won the election".
He said the Parliamentary election also had similar challenges which were being worked out.
The New Patriotic Party, this afternoon filed an electoral petition at the Supreme Court, to challenge the results of the just ended Presidential election, in which John Dramani Mahama, Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress emerged winner.
