The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially scheduled the election of its national executives for December 19, 2026.
Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary, made the announcement during an engagement with the media on Thursday, outlining a roadmap designed to strengthen the party’s grassroots foundation ahead of the next electoral cycle.
He emphasised that the reorganisation, mandated by the party’s constitution every four years, is a deliberate, strategic and consequential exercise critical to ensuring a strong party capable of forming a strong government.
The process, which commences this year, is seen as vital to renewing the party’s mandate and structure from the branch level upwards.
“The need for us every four years to initiate a series of activities is aimed at strengthening our party and ensuring that we are committed to the ideals of having a strong party that will be able to provide a strong government,” Mr Kwetey said.
He noted that the roadmap reveals a phased, bottom-up approach.
“The foundation will be laid with branch elections, spanning January to June 2026. This initial phase involves the re-issuance of membership registers, registration of new members, and the authentication of records, culminating in the election and validation of branch executives by June 30,” he said.
The General Secretary said the party would move to constituency elections, slated for October 24 and 25, 2026.
“This will be followed by regional elections on November 14 and 15. The entire process will culminate in the National Congress on December 19, where the party’s top leadership, including the Chairman, General Secretary, and other national officers, will be elected,” he said.
Mr Kwetey emphasised on ensuring transparency and fairness, directly addressing concerns about internal electoral malpractices.
He said to address and eliminate mafia activities that included intimidation and other rough tactics, all constituency executives must publicly announce and publish official meeting venues and times for every branch.
“This exercise is not routine. It is deliberate, strategic and consequential. It must therefore be treated with the seriousness it deserves,” he said.
The General Secretary added that the published lists would be strictly supervised and validated by regional and national executives.
He said the registration of new members would occur between February 10 and March 30, administered strictly at branch locations.
“A plastic membership card, essential for proving good standing and eligibility to contest positions, can be obtained for GH¢50. Existing members are also required to verify their details in the branch registers, which executives have been directed to open fully and transparently,” he said.
Mr Kwetey expressed appreciation to the party’s grassroots structures and polling agents for their role in the 2024 elections, asserting that the NDC remains determined to “delivering on our commitments and to continue to put a lot more joy on the faces of the Ghanaian people.”
