The only accessible route for delivering aid into Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray has been impassable for over a week, says the UN, worsening the humanitarian situation there.
Aid agencies have run out of food for distribution in most areas.
At least 172 aid trucks are currently stuck in Semera, in the neighbouring Afar region, unable to start the journey into Tigray via the border town of Abala.
An upsurge in fighting along the route has made passage dangerous, the UN says.
There have also been delays in getting Ethiopian government approval to travel into the Tigray region.
Aid agencies estimate that at least 100 aid trucks each day need to be entering Tigray to meet the humanitarian needs there.
Since mid-July a total of around 300 trucks have made it through.
The US State Department has reiterated its call on the Ethiopian government to allow aid to pass through and called on all parties to end fighting.
