Following a suggestion by Stephen Ashitey Adjei, an Executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tema East, that Isaac Ashai Odamtten, should contest the Parliamentary seat for NDC in the Central Region, another member of the party has countered.
Mr Gilbert Ibrahim, a leading member of the NDC in Tema West, and Special Assistant to the former Mayor, Mr Ashai Odamtten said the former MCE rather had a healthy chance of annexing a Parliamentary seat for the NDC in Tema East; and should therefore make his move in there.
"I absolutely understand Stephen Ashitey Adjei (Moshake's) reasoning. We want more seats for our party in the upcoming election and a spread of the seats that we secure will be good for us, but the obvious fact also, is that Mr Ashai Odamtten has better footprints in Tema than in Ekumfi.
"His political legacy is in the form of developmental projects he executed as Mayor, and he was a Mayor of Tema, not Ekumfi," Mr Ibrahim, who is also a lecturer, said
Specifically, he suggested that Mr Odamtten run for the Tema East Parliamentary ticket of the NDC, saying he would easily beat the ruling New Patriotic Party's Titus Glover, who is the incumbent MP if he is able to annex the ticket.
"For a long time, the NPP has dominated the whole of Tema, because of a polarity between an Akan and Ga population. Titus Glover has capitalised on his Ga heritage to annex the seat for a long time. But Ashai Odamtten is also an indigene of Tema, and so it will be easy to get the indigenous votes.
"In respect of the Akan voter populace, Mr Odamtten can easily sway them also because of his Akan maternal lineage, being a Fanti from Otuam," Mr. Gilbert Ibrahim said.
His take was in response to Mr. Ashitey Adjei,'s call on Mr Ashai Odamtten to run for the 2020 Parliamentary ticket of the NDC in Ekumfi, because as a man with his maternal lineage there, he has a finer chance of becoming MP from there.
Moshake reasoned that, the Tema East Parliamentary primary campaign arena, was already too crowded with aspirants, including; the popular Kempes Ofosuware, whom he said had a real chance of winning to contest on the party's ticket again.
He added that with both Kempes, himself a former Mayor of Tema, and Mr Odamtten, being winnable candidates, it would be to the disadvantage of the NDC if both of them run for the ticket of a single Constituency, since that would automatically mean that the NDC would have to forego one.
Mr Ibrahim said Mr Odamtten rather had a better chance of becoming MP in Tema because he had his political legacy in the Harbour city.
"When Mr Odamtten was the MCE of Tema, he built roads, upgraded schools and improved healthcare among others and these are feats that he is very much remembered for."
He therefore suggested to him to run in Tema East and campaign on the basis of his Mayoral achievements.
Interestingly, Mr Odamtten himself has not yet declared any intention to run for MP, though it is believed that he would run for the 2020 Parliamentary ticket in Tema East.
