The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has rolled out five comprehensive initiatives aimed at improving the standards of living of the people of the area.
The interventions include the Agriculture Sector Support Initiative, the Education and Scholarship Fund, the Art and Creativity for Youth Initiative, the Women Microcredit Programme and the Social Support for the Aged and Vulnerable—an initiative that aligned with the Widows Summit introduced by his predecessor.
In order to promote fairness and inclusiveness, no individual or household is expected to benefit from more than one of the interventions.
Dr Mahama announced this at a constituency-wide stakeholder engagement in Walewale last Sunday.
The event brought together residents from all parts of the constituency, including traditional leaders, youth representatives, women’s groups and opinion leaders.
It afforded the MP the opportunity to interact directly with the people, provide updates on his mandate, and gather feedback on community needs and expectations.
In his remarks, Dr Mahama indicated that all the interventions were being rolled out concurrently this year.
He explained that "under the agriculture initiative, 100 fuel-powered pump machines had been procured for dry season farming. Registration of farmers will commence as soon as possible, which will be given to farmers at half the market price to allow scaling-up to cover other farmers".
He added that under the education and scholarship initiative, a GH¢400,000 fund had been set up to provide scholarships to brilliant, needy students, stating that several mathematical sets had also been donated to candidates under the programme.
To empower women in the constituency, the MP said the Women Microcredit Programme would offer small-scale financial support to enable them to expand their businesses and sustain their families.
He emphasised that empowering women economically would have a direct positive impact on household welfare and community development.
He also highlighted the Social Support for the Aged and Vulnerable as a continuation of a legacy programme initiated by his predecessor, which aims at providing food, healthcare support, and other essential services to elderly persons, widows, and those living with disabilities who are often marginalised in development efforts.
Dr Mahama reiterated his commitment to enhancing the development of the constituency through continuous advocacy and lobbying.
Some of the participants at the meeting lauded the MP for organising the engagement, a timely response to pressing challenges faced by residents and a demonstration of responsible leadership.
