Mr Francis Ainoo, Mpohor Wassa East District Co-ordinator of the Science, Technology and Mathematics Education Clinic (STME) has urged students, especially the female ones, to take keen interest in the study of science and mathematics.
Mr Ainoo gave the advice at the end of a five-day STME Clinic, organised for selected first and second cycle institutions from the district, in the Western Region.
This year's clinic, organised by the Ghana Education Service, in collaboration with World Vision Ghana, brought together 28 students, who were taken through practical methods of learning Science, Technology and Mathematics.
Speaking on the theme "Promoting Quality Science and Technology Education for Sustainable National Development", Mr Ainoo said there was the need to promote these subjects, particularly among the girl-child, in order to achieve a balance in human resource development.
"The situation in which majority of our students are studying humanities must send a warning signal to us and the country's development as a whole", he added.
Mr Ainoo said the district had instituted a science and mathematics quiz competition to be conducted side by side with the annual clinic as a means of sustaining interest and making the subject attractive.
Alhaji Yakubu Adams, District Director of Education, commended the World Vision and the district assembly for their continued support for the programme.
"I am happy with the level of awareness created, after sustaining the programme for the past ten years," he said.
He noted that, promoting quality science and technological education was the "surest way of solving our present day problems, and with the discovery of oil, expertise would be needed, especially in the sciences to aid in exploration".
Alhaji Adams also commended the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa, for initiating various courses in oil exploration.
Mr Anthony Bassaw, District Chief Executive of the area called on students to change their attitude towards the study of the subjects, adding that, "without Maths, science and English, it will be very difficult to gain admission into any tertiary institution".
He therefore charged stakeholders, particularly teachers, to make the subject interesting for students.
