An attempt to rob a bank in a posh south Delhi locality was foiled when police intercepted nine gunmen, including a foreigner triggering a shootout in which four robbers were injured.
The whole drama unfolded in Green Park Extension on Monday evening in full public glare as heavily-armed policemen banged their car into one of the two vehicles of the robbers, which they were following, and surrounded it.
As they were intercepted, four gangsters, including the leader Satya Prakash alias Satte, in one of the cars - Honda Accord -- opened fire at the police which was retaliated.
Four gangsters in the Honda Accord received injuries while five others who were in Santro car managed to flee from the scene, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H. G. S. Dhaliwal told reporters in New Delhi after the shootout.
However, late in the night, two persons surfaced in the studio of a news channel in Noida claiming that they were in the car which Delhi Police claimed fled from the scene during the encounter.
The two persons, identified as Nadir and Harpal, were arrested by Delhi Police.
A senior police official said the duo were taken to custody while they were giving interview to Sahara Samay news channel claiming that they were innocent and had nothing to do with the gang.
"We are verifying the claims of the duo. We want to know what their role is," the official said.
The injured were identified as Satya Prakash, the gang leader, Shakeel, Sonu and Nadeem, who is of either Afghan or Uzbeck origin, Dhaliwal said.
All the four, from who loaded pistols have been seized, have received gunshot injuries but are out of danger.
Police sources said a special team was chasing the gangsters in two cars and they banged the car into the Honda Accord near the RWA gate of Green Park Extension.
