The Ghana Navy is organizing a five-week skills' training for 300 wives of officers of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of its sixtieth anniversary celebration.
The participants consist of 200 naval wives, and 50 each for the wives of the Ghana Army and Ghana Air Force.
The estimated GHs 44,000.00 training, would equip them with skills such as beads making, ice cream making, flower arrangements, catering, and confectionery.
Mr Daniel Titus Glover, Member of Parliament for Tema East and Deputy Minister of Transport, opening the training programme, commended the wives of the naval officers for supporting their husbands to discharge their duties to the country.
Mr Glover commended the Ghana Navy for the initiative as according to him, it would provide alternative financial support to the officers.
He urged participants to be committed to the training to acquire the needed skills but should not use the programme as an excuse to neglect their homes and children.
Commodore James Osei Kontoh, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Eastern Naval Command, in a welcoming address, said the Ghana Navy was established on July 29, 1959.
Commodore Kontoh added that as part of programmes lined up for the anniversary, they thought it wise to appreciate their spouses who had been of tremendous help to the success story of the Ghana Navy.
He said officers were often away hence the upbringing of children and home making duties rested on the spouses adding "our long absence from home does not deter them from taking care of the home and maintaining the color of our white delicate uniforms".
Mr Glover presented a cheque for GHs 2,000.00 to recruit Doris Andoh for being the all round best recruit.
