The Ghanaian Women's Association of Georgia (GWAG), USA, in collaboration with Rotary Clubs of Accra-Airport and Airport City, Ghana has donated a three 40-feet container load of maternity ward equipment and supplies to four government hospitals in Ghana.
The step was a continuation of the Association's vision to give back to the motherland of its members.
Beneficiary hospitals were the Kwahu Atibie Government Hospital, Ejura Government Hospital, Tema General Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The medical supplies worth over $300,000 included incubators, oxygen concentrators, defibrillators, manual resuscitators, oxygen trolleys, glucometres, stethoscopes, sphygmanometres, anesthesia machines, ambu bags, suction machines, bedrail sets, crutches, walkers and walking canes.
Others were bear huggers and warmers, wheelchairs, orthopedic back cushions, medical cart, mayor stands, infant weighing scales, oxygen tanks, mattress units, hospital beds, gloves as well as wound care, infection prevention, IV infusion and personal hygiene supplies.
Madam Adiza Harruna, the President of GWAG said: "In four years, we have donated over $400,000 worth of maternity equipment and supplies to 11 government hospitals and we only want to do more. Our 501c-3 (non-profit) gives us a platform as a group to be benevolent in many ways especially on a larger scale".
She said as the Association strived to reduce preventable deaths and support expectant mothers to get basic care, raise awareness and make an impact in communities in the area of pregnancy as well as safe delivery.
"The future looks bright and we are very hopeful of positive outcomes for mothers and babies in underserved communities in Ghana," she added.
Madam Harruna said GWAG was driven by the shared belief that a woman empowered, invests her knowledge and resources in her children, family and eventually, her community.
She disclosed that GWAG would raise funds on April 27, 2019 to ship another 40-feet container of medical supplies to support the Akosombo, University of Cape Coast (UCC), Nkaseim, Danfa Healthcare facility and 37 Hospitals.
"The maternity unit at UCC Teaching Hospital is under review for adoption on the upcoming phase four project," she said.
Hajia Nana Fatima High, the Ghana Coordinator of GWAG who donated the items on behalf of the Association said some of the supplies would be given to the 37 Military and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals.
She advised the beneficiary hospitals to properly maintain the supplies to serve their patients and encourage more donors to support the hospitals.
She disclosed that GWAG had adopted the Tamale Teaching Hospital's maternity unit with an aim of helping to develop and maintain it in good shape.
Ms Afua Ababio, the President of the Accra Airport Rotary Club gave the assurance that the Club would ensure that the equipment were well utilised and maintained.
She thanked the GWAG for the collaboration as it helped the Club to fulfil its mission to promote quality healthcare especially in underserved communities within the country.
Mr Reynolds Awuah, the Acting Deputy Director of Services, Tamale Teaching Hospital, who assisted to receive the items on behalf of the hospitals expresses gratitude to the donors for the benevolent action.
He said the hospitals, being referral centres faced many challenges that the supplies could help to control to offer the best healthcare services to their patients.
GWAG, currently with more than 40 members works to build stronger communities to positively change the world and alleviate the struggles of maternal health.
