Madam Paulina Patience Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister has praised the Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region for their vigilance and commitment to security issues in the region.
She also commended other security agencies, for maintaining the peace and security in the recent renewed Bolgatanga Chieftaincy clashes and the mining explosion that occurred at Gbane in the Talensi District, which claimed about 17 lives.
She said but for the vigilance and self commitment from the Ghana Police Service with support from other sister security agencies, the two instances would have escalated beyond control and exposed the region to the world for the bad reasons.
Madam Abayage was speaking at the 2018 West African Security Services (WASSA) Regional get together organised by the Ghana Police Service in Bolgatanga.
The celebration, which brought together other security institutions such as the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Prison Service among others was on the theme, "consolidating Ideas Against Vigilantism for National Safety."
The Regional Minister further applauded the service for recording significant improvement in all crime indicators with the exception of Rape and Defilement where the region recorded eight and 25 in 2017 and 18 and 29 in 2018 respectively.
Statistics from the service showed that crime rate in the areas of robbery, murder and narcotics in the region dropped from 60, 20 and 18 in 2017 to 38, 12 and 11 in 2018 respectively.
The region further recorded reduction in stealing cases from 1,227 in 2017 to 1,169 in 2018 while kidnapping cases increased by one making it two cases in 2018.
She said security issues were very paramount to the government and added that government was working hard to equip the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure that they clamped down on people or group of persons who would want to disturb the peace of the country.
She therefore called on the police service to increase their patrols, especially at the borders to ensure that criminals did not get into the country and cause mayhem.
Mr Osei Kwaku Ampofo-Duku, the Regional Police Commander, indicated that his outfit was determined to carry out its mandated responsibility of ensuring peace, and fulfil the vision of being capable of delivering planned, democratic, peaceful and proactive services up to the standards of international best practice.
The Regional Commander indicated that the improved performance was as a result of proactive measures implemented last year and admonished members of the public to take personal security seriously and report any suspicious characters to the service.
He warned that "the Ghana Police Service is committed to the safety and security of persons and property in the country. The Service will therefore leave no stone unturned to deal with anybody or group of persons who intend to foment trouble in the name of party vigilantism."
