The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Krachi East Mr Safo Nketia, has spearheaded a massive lakeside cleanup exercise, mobilising residents and stakeholders to tackle pollution and safeguard water resources in the municipality.
The initiative undertaken in collaboration with community members, focused on restoring environmental cleanliness along the lakeshore.
Participants removed large volumes of solid waste, plastic debris, and organic refuse that had accumulated over time and posing threats to public health and the lake’s ecosystem.
Volunteers were grouped into teams to sort recyclable materials and ensure proper disposal of non-recyclable waste at designated landfill sites.
Mr Nketia stressed the importance of sustained sanitation efforts, noting that regular cleanup exercises were critical in preventing waterborne diseases and preserving the aesthetic appeal of public spaces.
He further revealed plans to partner with private sector organisations to fund future clean-up activities and intensify environmental education in schools and markets.
Mr Edem Atiase, an Environmental expert supporting the programme, underscored its long-term benefits, particularly for biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of local fishing activities.
The exercise also served as a platform for public education, with awareness campaigns encouraging households to adopt proper waste segregation and responsible disposal practices.
Data gathered during the operation is expected to guide future environmental policies and improve resource allocation for waste management.
To enhance efficiency, the cleanup team deployed equipment, including a backhoe loader, to clear heavy waste deposits and rehabilitate sections of the shoreline.
Efforts were also made to stabilise eroded areas to improve water quality and prevent further degradation.
Mr Emmanuel Atali, the Dambai Lakeside Electoral Area Assemblyman and Residents who participated in the exercise expressed appreciation for the initiative and pledged their continued support.
