The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has presented 2,000 Mathematics textbooks worth GHC10, 000 to 20 selected Senior High Schools (SHS) in three northern regions.
The beneficial schools were from Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions, which included: Pong-Tamale SHS, Savelugu SHS, Gambaga Girls SHS, and Northern School of Business SHS, Walewale SHS/Technical, Tamale Girls SHS, Nalerigu SHS, Yendi SHS, Business SHS, St. Bernadette Technical Institute.
The rest were Sandema SHS, Bolgatanga Girls SHS Bongo SHS Awe SHS/Tecnical, Paga Community Day SHS, Hilla LImann SHS, T l Ahmadiyya SHS, Kanton SHS, Islamic SHS and Birifoh SHS.
The presentation of the textbooks was aimed at transforming the teaching and learning of Mathematics in second cycle schools across the country.
Mrs Nana Esi Quansah-Soderberg, the Deputy Market and Corporate Affairs Manager and Executive Assistant to the Director General of GPHA, speaking at the presentation ceremony said the schools were selected based on their peculiar needs.
She said GPHA is determined to support students to excel in the Core Mathematics subject in their West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Mrs Quansah-Soderberg said the lack of materials to teach the Mathematics subject has contributed to the poor performance of students in many SHS schools in the country.
She urged students to be committed to their studies and make use of the textbooks so that they can pass very well in their WASSCE.
Mr Adam Gunu, the Assistant Headmaster of the Tamale Girls SHS, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, commended GPHA for the donation.
He called on other organizations to assist them to get portable drinking water in some of the schools which were facing water challenges.
