Mr Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, has said that eight out of ten dams constructed in Bongo under the ‘One village One Dam’ programme are in use and serving the people of Bongo.
He said the other two were about 90 percent complete and when completed, it would boost the farming activities in the area, especially during the dry season.
Mr Ayamga said the dams are designed to complement the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ programme to promote quality livelihood and the development of the people in the area.
He said the objective of the initiative by government was to enable farmers to access water for their farms and feed their livestock in the area during the dry season.
Mr Ayamga, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bongo, the district capital, said government was committed to providing quality livelihoods to the people in the district.
He said that about 80 percent of the people in the area are farmers who have expressed satisfaction with the initiative because it would support them in their farming activities.
Mr Ayamga said the presence of the dam would also reduce stealing of animals in the area as they would not have to stray away from home to drink water.
The DCE said these dams were the dug-out type and were part of the first phase of the one village one dam programme adding that the second phase would start soon and larger irrigable dams would be constructed to facilitate farming activities in the area.
He said the dams would make the Bongo District an agricultural hub for food crops and livestock production to feed the entire region.
Mr Ayamga said communities including Kabre, Aserbra, Kuyellingo, and Ayopia among others have already started enjoying the dams as their animals do not travel far for water.
